And now for sumthin’ completely diff’rent

I was recently in a mood to play an old DOS game called Clock Solitaire. It’s a card game where you’ve got cards forming a circle as if they’re numbers on the clock with an extra pull pile in the middle of the circle, and the objective is to complete all other four-of-a-kind sets before the fourth king is revealed in order to win the game:

I finally managed to beat the game of Clock Solitaire and I celebrated my victory by snagging all the playing cards from that game, making a sprite sheet out of them so that it can be uploaded to The Spriters Resource:

Anyways, it was a fun game but extremely difficult to win.

Playing around some Castle of the Winds

Last night I’ve been doing some Castle of the Winds in Windows 3.11 under DOSBox since it’s been a long time since I played it during the Windows XP years. Here’s a screenshot of what the gameplay looks like in the game:

So far I have made some good progress. I have journeyed my way along the highway that leads to the village of Bjarnarhaven since the village at the very beginning of the game got mysteriously burned down. I am now currently in Fortress level 4 of this game, but I’ll plan going to the fifth Fortress Level whenever I feel like playing Castle of the Winds again. πŸ™‚

Late Night Fun with After Dark in DOSBox

I decided to install the After Dark 3.2 screensaver program on my Windows 3.11 program under DOSBox, and I played every single screen saver and they all seem to be working fine but only in a 256 color screen resolution. Here are some screenshots of some After Dark screen savers that I took under DOSBOX:

Bad Dog!
DOS Shell
Rebound
Mountains
Nonsense (My most favorite After Dark screensaver, just because it’s too hilarious.) πŸ˜›

I even checked out You Bet Your Head, and that screen saver seems to work too. Oh, and not only did I install After Dark, I also installed old Windows programs that are suitable to run in Windows 3.1 under DOSBox such as the Spiderman Cartoon Maker, the Symantec Game Pack, Castle of the Winds, etc.

So far everything seems to work fine under that old operating system, and I was happy about that. πŸ™‚ So now that I got that done, I must now head off to Sleepsville and wonder what I should dream about tonight. Something that includes friendly cartoon characters and going out on cartoonish adventures.

Some Old School Arcade Pool for DOS

Been playing a bit of an old DOS game that I’ve never tried out under DOSBox earlier this evening. It’s called Arcade Pool, a game where you can compete a Pool competition against other computer players and/or human players. Here’s a screenshot of what this game would look like:

All you got to do is use the left mouse button to line up the cue ball and then right click to fire away to see if any balls would go down the sinker holes until there is a winner at the end. I like how there’s different Pool games such as Custom Pool, US Open Pool, UK Open Pool, etc.

This here is a screenshot of the results made in the game of Pool that has numbers of shots made, fouls made and balls sunk down. This game is fun to play but hard to score some shots when it comes to making fouls and misses. It will now be added to my private collection of old DOS games.

Playing around some Dig Dug for DOS

Last year I went to My Abandonware and found a DOS game called Dig Dug, so I decided to give this a try:

You’ll play as the dude dressed in white clothing, and you’re digging underground to destroy all Pookas (the red round monsters that wear yellow goggles) and Fygars (the green dragons that breathe fire) by blowing them up with your air pump or crushing them with large rocks:

I blew up the one and only Fygar head-on for 800 points in the first round.
I got those two Pookas crushed 2,500 points. Yippee!

I’d say this is a really fun DOS Game. I was thinking about playing other Namco DOS games like Pac-Man and Galaxian, but I’m gonna have to wait on that for another time. πŸ˜€

The Green Rabbit Strikes Back

I played some Jazz Jackrabbit yesterday and I have completed the first episode after defeating an evil turtle known as Devan Shell, who’s riding on his bouncy spaceship:

So that’s one down and five more to go. I will dig into this some more any other day, and hopefully Jazz can stop Devan and his twin mega battleships from destroying his home planet Carrotus, and rescue his girlfriend Eva Earlong. πŸ™‚

Playing around some Time Slaughter

I found another DOS game where Street Fighter meets Mortal Kombat. This is Time Slaughter, a fighting game made by Bloodlust Software. I decided to tear into this old-school fighting game.

You will play as one of the ten characters and the object of the game is to defeat every opponent to get all the way up to the hideous robotic monstrosity known as Portal. Here’s what the game looks like:

The gameplay looks nice and so do the characters. Your character’s winquote will appear after you win two rounds against your opponent just like in the Street Fighter games:

Here’s one of the winquotes that really made me laugh my ass off:

Another thing in this game, if you successfully use a slaughter move (or fatality) on all ten original characters with no continues, then you will fight against the bonus character named Staine. Now that’s amazing! πŸ™‚ What I like about this game are not only the characters, but also their battle stages like the deserted island, the New York alley, the prehistoric caveman times, etc.

Unfortunately, the creators of the game never made a sequel. πŸ™ So anyway, that’s what the game is all about. It’s bloody fun! πŸ˜€

The DOSBoxing Adventure Continues

Last night I went to My Abandonware and got a couple of DOS games that I wanted to try out:

The first one is called Life In The Fast Lane (a.k.a. LifeGenesis). You just use the spacebar to create life cells and press Enter to generate the cell field. What I like about this is you can do other things like if you press the R key it makes a random field of life cells, and you can save and load your creations on to your computer. Here’s my creation in this game:

And this DOS game is called Poker Galore:

The gameplay is not bad at all, and what I like about it is the different video poker games like Jacks or Better, Joker’s Wild, Second Chance, etc. πŸ™‚

After Dark Open Thread

Last night I went to a website called Play DOS Games Online, where you look around and find DOS games and old Windows games that you want to play, and I found an After Dark 3.2 program that has various screensavers. Here are some of them that are my favorites:

You Bet Your Head
Bad Dog!
DOS Shell
Rat Race

They’re really good screensavers and so do the others. πŸ™‚ Unfortunately, it won’t work under Windows 7 but it will if it’s running under DOSBox or a virtual machine. I was thinking about doing that one of these days.
